The importance of having a sponsor is often emphasized during treatment, and a recent study looked at some of the the reasons why. Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital found that when people got a sponsor they tended to be more involved with the 12 step process and attend more meetings. They also found that when people had trusting and understanding relationships with their sponsors they reported less substance use after treatment. Another interesting result was that when people didn’t find a sponsor relatively soon after treatment they were less likely to get one at all. Put all this together and it’s easy to see why it’s important to get a sponsor and start developing a positive relationship with them soon after treatment.
