Our Unique Treatment Modalities
Williamsville Wellness offers treatment based on individual needs, focusing on the body, mind, spirit, and emotions. Therapy modalities include:
Evidence-Based Psychotherapy Approaches
Therapists at Williamsville Wellness implement multiple approaches based on individual needs to address gambling addiction and mental health problems. Therapy approaches include:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Schema Therapy.
Group therapy is a commonly used treatment modality for individuals suffering from addiction. Groups offered at Williamsville Wellness tend to focus on interpersonal processing, skill building, and psychoeducational material to promote recovery.
On-site telephonic or video conference sessions with family are highly emphasized with gambling addiction treatment. Through family therapy, loved ones will be educated on gambling addiction and learn how the entire family can support the patient and stop enabling behaviors. Family therapy can consist of half day or full day on-site visits and include a multidisciplinary focus, meeting with psychologists, therapists, and peer counselors to address such areas as: recovery planning, rebuilding trust, financial concerns, and establishing emotional safety.
Art therapy is the therapeutic use of art-making through a variety of mediums (e.g., painting, sculpting, woodwork, etc.). By creating art and reflecting on the product and process, people can increase awareness of self and others, cope with symptoms, and enjoy the pleasure of making art. Our art therapist works with patients in individual, group, and family sessions.
Mindfulness is the practice of maintaining a present focus on our thoughts, feelings, body sensations, and surrounding environments without creating judgment. When we practice mindfulness, our thoughts tune into what we’re sensing in the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future. This is particularly helpful for compulsive gamblers who have difficulty tolerating emotional experiences and who need practice slowing down and being in the moment. Patients will have plenty of opportunities to practice mindfulness meditations in therapy with our mindfulness coach.
Hypnosis is a guided relaxation to promote a state of extreme focus of the mind in order to bring subconscious thoughts, feelings, memories, and images to the conscious level for better processing. Hypnotherapy can be used to help patients gain control over their undesired behaviors or help them cope better with anxiety and pain. Patients have the opportunity to work with a therapist specially trained in hypnosis here at Williamsville Wellness.
Work with a therapist to address issues surrounding the expression of anger. Learn and practice techniques for calming down and responding to feelings of anger effectively and assertively. Anger management is based on the premise that anger is a normal emotion when expressed appropriately.
Psychological and Cognitive Testing
Confidential testing identifies strengths and weaknesses of our patients, including an analysis of their personality characteristics and cognitive capacity. Testing is just one tool we use to help the compulsive gamblers understand the core issues leading to their addictive behavior.
Seeing others who have struggled through gambling addiction and have been able to live successfully in recovery provides hope and inspiration for those still trapped by addiction. Support and guidance from others in recovery becomes a powerful motivator and a beacon of hope for our patients.
Twelve Step Process
Our peer counselors help patients understand the 12-Step philosophy and facilitate step-work through Gamblers’ Anonymous with patients. Patients attend at least three off-site 12-Step meetings each week while in our program. In addition, the 12-Step philosophy is often integrated into individual sessions.
For patients who are ambivalent about 12-step philosophy, Williamsville Wellness also introduces a 12-step alternative program, SMART Recovery, to our patients. SMART Recovery focuses on learning tools for success in recovery based on scientific knowledge and reason, with less emphasis on spirituality.
Massage therapy aids in enhancing a patient’s health and well-being by reducing stress, relaxing muscles, reducing pain, and rehabilitating injury. Massage therapy is offered weekly to patients at Williamsville Wellness.
Yoga is a series of exercises for mental and physical health, utilizing breath control, simple meditation, and deliberate bodily posture. Yoga can be used as a way of coping with stress, pain, anxiety, and encouraging individuals to be in the present (i.e., be mindful). A yoga class is offered 1-2 times per week at Williamsville Wellness.
Exercise and Nutrition
Each patient meets with our personal trainer who will design an individualized exercise program and provide nutritional education to aid in recovery. Balanced and nutritious meals are provided by our award winning chef and can be tailored to dietary preferences.
Patients will learn life skills, such as cooking and meal planning, that will help support a holistic recovery. Patients work with our chef once a week in this group experience.
Recreational and Activity Therapy
On and off-site opportunities for recreation are available to patients at Williamsville Wellness. Some examples of off-site recreational activities are golf, bowling, putt-putt, movies, museum trips, out-to-dinner nights, and board game time. At the main location, there is a massage bed and chair, and also a sauna room. These activities are offered to help patients learn that they can have fun and feel good without gambling.
