Dr. Lyndon J. Aguiar

Ph.D., LCP, ICGC-I: Clinical Director

Dr. Lyndon Aguiar joined Williamsville Wellness in January 2014 after 20+ years in the fields of counseling and psychotherapy, clinical assessment, teaching/training, research, public health administration and management, leadership, and policy development. He is a licensed clinical psychologist and he holds an International Counselor of Gambling Certification (ICGC-I).

Dr. Aguiar held a professional faculty position at University Counseling Services at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) prior to his appointment at Williamsville Wellness. At VCU, he served as outreach coordinator and he led and participated in several university-wide organizations and committees. During his eight years at VCU, Dr. Aguiar also provided individual, group, and couples therapy. He supervised the clinical work of pre-doctoral interns and advanced graduate students in counseling. He also taught seminars and workshops on depression and anxiety management, culture shock and adjustment, multicultural counseling, men’s issues, and clinical assessment. He earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from New York University (an APA-accredited program), where he also taught courses in counseling skills, research, and practice. Dr. Aguiar completed his pre-doctoral internship at the University of Miami Counseling Center (APA-accredited program).

Dr. Aguiar also holds a Master’s Degree in psychology from Florida International University and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami – “Go ‘Canes!”. He has presented at national, state, and regional conferences on the topics of gambling treatment, addiction and recovery, and mental health outreach. Dr. Aguiar has presented his research at APA national conventions and he has also published a number of articles in peer-reviewed journals and other media. He uses schema therapy, an integrative approach that considers developmental factors and is client centered and interpersonal in nature.

Dr. Aguiar practices self-care by engaging in fitness and outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and gardening. He is fascinated by history and his ancestry and this has guided his travel to Europe, Asia, and South America. He enjoys photography and music/concerts. Dr. Aguiar lives in Richmond, VA with his wife and Oliver the beagle. He enjoys time with his two adult children.
